My statement
|
|
For me, the greatest advantage of painting is the ability to construct fictions that inherently evidence time, both in its creation, and in reference to a history of a medium. With these paintings I provoke a varied interpretation of events as well as empathy in the viewer. I am interested in populating imagined spaces and devising scenarios as the painting plays out. In recent paintings, adolescents and children illustrate instances of primitive but enduring social conventions and hierarchies. Individuals are defined by their placement within the group structure and their surroundings, fostering early and persistent world-views. Personal and found photos and images are collaged into a singular composition to form a suggested narrative. Fiction and reality intertwine as personal histories and photographs supplement found imagery and painterly invention. I depict these situations as inspired by personal experience, art historical modes and fiction in the form of literature and allegory.
