      My statement
Japanese minimalist painters, Franz Kline, Odilon Redon, Renaissance paintings of Christ, Francis Bacon—these are just a few of the influences that are apparent in my artwork. Using acrylic paint, charcoal, rose petals, and household items such as paper towels, Q-tips, and cotton balls, I try to create a world that is both ethereal and stark. I can’t stop using red, black, and white as my primary colors, although yellow and purple have been making an appearance as of late. My Protestant upbringing seems to pop up in my work when I least expect it, bringing with it the Christian cross and melodramatic imagery.

My first pieces were my starkest, and they formed the “Spiritual” series. I titled them “Spiritual I, II, and III,” and they were mainly composed of alternating black and red lines. The idea for these came from when I used to do what I called “line drawings”—where I used a ruler to draw consecutive straight lines across a page. Some would be spaced evenly next to each other, while others were farther apart. Toward the end of the page I would let my pencil keep going after the end of the ruler, creating a hectic, jagged line that somewhat resembled an EKG line. To this day, I have no idea what these drawings mean or why they soothed me; all I know is that they formed the basis for my early work.

As my work progressed, I began working with heavier lines and experimenting with different textures. For a while I used a lot of rose petals and cotton. One painting, simply called “Untitled (Cotton),” was the influence behind a song I wrote for Guillermo Sexo, a band I was previously part of, called—not surprisingly—“Cotton.” Another painting, “Secret Garden,” which I painted after a trip to Italy with my ex-boyfriend, uses rose petals, leaves, and a quote from an Arthur C. Clarke book to represent a field we saw in Rome during our trip.

In my most recent (and far from finished) series, “The 51 Most Beautiful People,” I use si
