Born June 5, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Michael McAreavy graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1985 (BA, Business Administration). A twenty year stint within the financial services industry has included a paralleling fine art photography career path dating back to 1998. Being enamored by light nearly his entire life, coupled with his strong appreciation for the written word, it came as no surprise to McAreavy that he would pick up a camera and never look back. After all, photograph in Latin means to write with light. Dating back to his grade school days, McAreavy recalls writing about sunsets and the way light moved across the rooms within the family home. However, in technical terms, he didn’t pick up a camera and aim it at anything with serious artistic intentions until nearly 1990. Discovering a mutual appreciation for the legendary Ansel Adams’ emotionally charged landscape images, his girlfriend at that time gifted him her 35mm Canon AE1 camera with the suggestion that he set out to make a few pictures for himself. His inaugural field studies were in Palo Duro Canyon State Park (south of Amarillo, TX) and White Sands National Monument, New Mexico.
Being one who has long had a certain appreciation for spatial arrangement, McAreavy discovered early on that well-balanced compositions presented themselves with surprising clarity. However, he confesses to having been far too impatient to sit down and pour through the countless volumes of subject matter on photography and all things related. Frankly speaking, he was too busy racing around within his pursuit to duplicating an Ansel Adams masterpiece. Time and again, he would find himself frustrated when it came time to review results returned from the processing lab. Now a source of embarrassment, he has divulged that this went on for several years.
