My statement
|
|
Body, feelings, perception, mentality and consciousness are aggregate parts that form an individual, but if we accept Goethe's theory, it is our “behaviour that is the mirror in which everyone displays his image”.
The paintings in Series I explore the parameters of self, self-awareness and an individual’s ability to communicate purely through physical and gestural expression. Inhabited with individuals either oblivious of observation or locked in a returned gaze, each painting becomes a silent conversation with the viewer. Meanings veiled, some openly lure the viewer in, while others challenge intrusion.
Currently Mariann is working on a series of paintings more intimate in nature. These paintings aim to further reduce the body to the level of the physical and explore it more as a tangible thing. Using filters such as water, surfaces, folds and interruptions explore the dichotomy between protection and exposure, vulnerability and strength.
