Professional history
Born in 1974, Rouget graduated from Paris' Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts with honors (les félicitations du jury à l'unaminité) in 2002. Since then, he has participated in many group exhibitions & festivals. In Paris... Pas n'importe où juste à côté (at the Couvent des cordeliers, in 2003), Vingtetunpuissancedouze (at the Palais de Tokyo), Première vue (at the Passage de Retz) & ArtskoolGozSouth (at Galerie Artcore, in 2006) ...as well as London, where his video Norbert was screened at the Centre of attention gallery, in 2005. Another key video, Pour maman is featured in Fraîcheur de vivre, a traveling exhibition curated by prominent French art critic Michel Nuridsany, to be seen in Canton, Shangaï, Macao, Jakarta & Porto (2004-6 ). Since 2005, he has been living and working in the Allier, in Central France’s Auvergne region.
Adapting his work to a multiplicity of media, both traditional and modern or prospective, Mathieu Rouget addresses the onlooker via overtly simple imagery. Relying on an ongoing visual vocabulary, based on permutations intended to be comprehensible to all, the artist sets out to circumvent potential formal and linguistic preconceptions.
Mixing landscapes and in situ contexts, his most recent series of photographs, La terre n'est pas ronde (The Earth isn't round) revisits standard concepts such as the frame, acting as a window on a weightless world, reconstituted in accordance with his own linear and geometric guidelines. At once strongly æsthetic and imbued with a sense of serenity, these photographs contrast considerably with the artist’s previous, more political work such as 14-18, a series of silk-screens on plastic refuse bags (1998) linked to WWI, Norbert (2001) a video documenting the violence conveyed by a former persistent offender who had been a barbouze agent in Algeria, or Pour Maman (2002) a drawing sequence filmed as a tribute to his mother, shortly after a trip to Sarajevo.
