My statement
|
|
America has not been the same since September 11, 2001. In the past five years I have been a witness to the historical changes in my adopted home. These changes are more acute for me because of my identity, being an Iranian-American. The events of September 11th have caused my Iranian identity to eclipse my American one and I have found myself a stranger in my own home. This sense of displacement, coupled with drastic political changes of the past few years, has made me question the stability of my future here. As a result, this instability has made me develop a hyper-sensitivity to my environment and has forced me to re-examine America, the country that I have grown to love, the country that I adopted as my second home at the age of twelve.
This feeling of instability is not just unique to me but is reflected in the patriotic fervor that has captured America in this past five years. This feeling has manifested itself through outward patriotic displays and has transformed the American landscape and psyche as a result. Since 2004 I have been compelled to document the historical transformation that I have been a witness to, as reflected in the patriotic insignia that surrounds us - from bumper stickers and subway cards to flags displayed on people’s homes and murals painted on buildings. We are confronted with these symbols on a daily basis and largely ignore them. They have become so deeply ingrained into our environments that most of us do not notice them anymore. However these symbols do hold some significance as markers of a new era in our history. We are living in a historical moment and are all witnesses to an important evolution in our cultural climate.
My photographs attempt to show the impact that September 11th and the ensuing patriotic fervor has had upon the American people and their surroundings. It is my intention to capture these changing times and present them to the public.
