My statement
I was five years old when my family and I left my birthplace of Baghdad, Iraq, and immigrated to Israel via Iran. It was in Tel-Aviv where I spent my adolescence and where I graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in 1970. Following a solo exhibition as a young artist, the America Israel Cultural Foundation awarded me a scholarship to study abroad. I arrived in California and enrolled at the San Francisco State University. I exhibited my art while completing my MFA degree. I set off for the East Coast after graduation and have been living and working in lower Manhattan since 1975.
For the past three decades I have been working on sculptures, paintings, drawings and installations that trace the footprints of various cultures throughout world history, inspired by my own background. The essence of my work lies in balancing the tension between surviving and vanishing. The abstract forms I utilize are drawn from both the natural and industrial/cultural world. Materialized in my work, each world adopts the other; they collide and coincide with each other to form a third “being-existence” – one that reflects the idea of survival and projects the energy of life.
